A brief history of the pocket square: Origins and evolution ?

The history of the pocket square dates back to ancient times when people used handkerchiefs made of linen or silk to wipe their faces and hands. However, the modern-day pocket square, as a fashion accessory, emerged in the 18th century, during the reign of King Louis XVI of France.

At that time, pocket squares were known as “pochettes” and were used to clean noses and wipe sweat from the forehead. They were typically made of plain white cotton or linen and were folded neatly into the breast pocket of a jacket.

In the 19th century, the pocket square became more of a decorative accessory, rather than a functional one. It was common for men to wear brightly colored and patterned pocket squares made of silk or wool.

During the early 20th century, pocket squares became more subdued in style, with plain white or black silk squares being the norm. However, in the 1920s, the pocket square once again became a popular accessory, and men began to experiment with different fabrics, patterns, and folds.

By the 1950s, pocket squares had become an essential accessory for the well-dressed man, and they were often coordinated with the tie or shirt. In the 1960s, the pocket square saw a decline in popularity as men began to dress more casually.

In recent years, the pocket square has made a comeback, with men of all ages and styles embracing the accessory. Today, pocket squares are available in a wide range of colors, fabrics, and patterns, and there are countless ways to fold them to create a unique and stylish look.
